War in the Marianas
These bunkers, also known as Japanese air raid shelters, are lined along the Flame Tree Road in Dan Dan. The bunkers played a key role in providing cover from the Americans during World War 2. The Japanese fortified themselves in not only these bunkers, but in caves as well. The bunkers afforded protection from Naval bombardment and American artillery. As for the construction date, the bunkers were built in 1939 and remain structurally sound.
